Our History

Working for you since 1791

1791

James Jackson started the business as a Dyer in Millgate, Newark and had six children – James, Mary, Eliza, Jane, Martha Ida and Sally – with his wife, Hannah Bennett

1835

Christmas becomes a National Holiday – that’s right, we’re older than Christmas!

1841

The main business moved to Lincoln, whilst the Newark entity was passed down from father to son, James Jr. The Saltergate shop was opened and Jacksons first advertisement appeared a couple of years later

1861

Sally (nee Jackson) and her husband Henry Clarke, an Accountant from Nottingham moved in next door to the Saltergate shop with their 4 children, Annie, John Henry, Mary Catherine and James (later to become 7 with Samuel Pearson, William Frederick and David)

1863

Eliza and Mary Beard (nee Jackson), who had worked at Saltergate since it’s opening, succeeded James Jackson as joint traders of M.B Jackson and Co., and worked with Sally and Henry to develop the business further as they bought the premises

1871

Jane Jackson and Annie Clarke joined the firm and under the guidance of Eliza and Mary, the business went from strength to strength, before Henry Clarke took over as Director of the Dyers and Dry Cleaners

1876

The Lincoln Laundry Co was established on Weir Street and due to their cleanliness and size, many of the surrounding districts sent their linen to them; it had the monopoly of the city as M.B Jackson & Co devoted only a very small part of their business to this class of work

1894

Jackson & Co. moved and expanded their works to St. George’s House in Webb Street, before Henry sadly died in 1898 and David and Mary Catherine took over the firm. A regular contract was the cleaning of the jockey silks from Newmarket; they were delivered by van to the LNER station and local orders were dealt with by boys pushing large wicker baskets on wheels

1909

A second receiving office opened in Lincoln High Street, and other branches were previously in existence at Boston and Grimsby, and under David Clarke, his wife Mabel and their friend Miss Briggs, the firm became a highly organised unit. There were 9 local competitors, but Jacksons was the household name

1923

The Lincoln Laundry Co were to be wound up voluntarily, and Jacksons Lincoln Laundry Co. was formed by Roy Somers Mackinder (son-in-law of David Clarke) and A.E Wiles as they acquired the site on Weir Street

1928

The Board (which included Roy, David and Mabel) called the company Jacksons Lincoln Laundry Ltd and there was an upgrade of all equipment. Business did so well that in 1930, the firms employees were rewarded with a day trip to Skegness

1948

These years were full of acquisitions, hard times throughout the war and selling sites to make money for new equipment and to increase wages. Laundries throughout the country were struggling, but the Management team remained strong throughout until David Clarke, died, aged 83 and was succeeded by R.S Mackinder as Chairman and Managing Director

1955

Following the death of R.S Mackinder, his son, Donald David Clarke Mackinder took over as Chairman and Managing Director

1975

To continue its success, the business needed to innovate and a linen hire service was started for hospitals, restaurants and hotels, as well as the workwear service that remains; weekly cleaning and repairs, cab towels, dustmats and washroom services with a personalised logo service. 70,000 items of laundry and cleaning were handled each week; workwear was 18% of the business

1990

Alistair Mackinder, Donald’s son, took over as Managing Director whilst Donald remains as Chairman. A 4-strong Management Team look to take the business further as they approach 200 years of service

1991

Jacksons celebrate their 200th anniversary with a dinner dance at Rustons Marconi Sports Club and a banquet at the White Hart Hotel

1997

The business changed its name to Jacksons Workwear Rental to reflect its main core business and all staff completed Basic Food Hygiene training due to an increase in customers requiring workwear in the food industry

1999

The Weir Street site was extended to allow for the increasing numbers of clients

2020

Jacksons Workwear Rental undertook a significant rebrand as they look to modernise their business and build on their 230 year history
